課程要求
Instructions for Written Summaries of Papers
Written summaries of papers should be 2 pages in length and should have the following format:
• Overall problems and objectives: The summaries should begin by stating, very briefly, the overall problem that the investigators are studying and the importance of the topic. Within the context of the overall problem, what specific objectives or questions are the paper addressing?
• Methods: What kinds of approaches and methods have the authors used to address their problems and questions. Highlight the important and/or new methods used in the paper.
• Results and conclusions: The bulk of the summary should consist of a description of the results and conclusions of the paper and of the experiments from which these conclusions were drawn (in other words, what did the authors learn and how did they learn it?). For each conclusion of the paper, there will be supporting data in the form of a figure or table. It is important to understand what is being shown in each of these.
• Conclude with statements as to whether you agree with the authors' conclusions and, if not, why not.
• Suggestions regarding the next unanswered questions and the next experiments the authors might do.
• References (References need to be cited in the text and the format of citation should follow Plant Cell).
• NOTE: You must ask your advisors to read and sign your summary before submitting.
You are strongly encouraged to get help from other people in understanding each paper. You are also strongly encouraged to try to write the summary while you are not looking at the paper. You should find this a valuable exercise which will both help to keep you from copying the paper as well as ensuring that you have the main points of the paper committed to memory.
